How are the smartphones influencing web design

With the evolution of technology, more and more people have started using smartphones and the use of these devices to surf on the internet is still growing increasingly. Mobile phones are very often used for these purposes, but unfortunately not many sites have optimization in terms of design to answer the needs of the users. If you ask the best web designers in Ottawa, their opinion is that using internet on your cell phone is limited because of many aspects: either the page format, the display size or the different approach to how the content is shown on the screen. While smartphone producers are very creative, offering a lot of screen sizes, from tablets to desktops, web designers must customize their work, to be suitable to any device. These are constantly changing, depending on the user, so online pages should be built to adapt to any screen size. For this reason, responsive web design has started to gain popularity, and can be defined as a design especially created to respond to the needs of a user and to change the features according to the size and characteristics of the device used. For example, the site of the same company will look slightly different if you open it from a laptop or a mobile phone.

When you visit a page from you telephone, you want to benefit from the same quality as if you would access it from your laptop and desktop. The information should be accessible, and the display must be user friendly, regardless the dimensions of your device. The term responsive has been preceded by adaptive or mobile, but there are some differences between them, although they may seem similar. While responsive design means that it can adapt in no time to any change, adaptive defines the designs which can be modified according to the purpose or situation. An ideal web design would combine both of them, because it has the perfect formula to function in a flawless manner. However, the term mobile is more different from these two, because it means building a special site, with the same content but with different design, to be used exclusively for mobile devices. This is not recommended, because it means depending on a new code base and browser sniffing, and this will make things more difficult for the developers and also for the users.

If we speak about web design for mobile phones, there are three main components which make it responsive: a layout which is flexible, media queries and flexible media. To begin with, building a flexible layout means using flexible grid, in order to make it adapt rapidly to any width. These flexible elements do not affect the fixed measurement units, like pixels of an image or inches, because the height and width are constantly changing, with the evolution of technology and development of mobile devices. This is how the variables in technology are strongly interconnected and influence each other.
